Do Not Get Too Inflated

1 Sep

Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters.
Not many of you were wise by human standards,
not many were powerful,
not many were of noble birth.
Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise,
and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong,
and God chose the lowly and despised of the world,
those who count for nothing,
to reduce to nothing those who are something,
so that no human being might boast before God.  (1 Cor 1:26-29)

There are many people who go around in life with inflated egos.

They think that the world revolves around them.

They act like the world revolves around them.

They would be shocked to find out that the world does not revolve around them.

Sad to say, sometimes “us” is “them”.  There are times that we think that about ourselves as well.

Paul reminds us of a very basic truth, though.   We are all weak, sinful people.  And yet, in our weakness, in our frail humanity, God chose us in order to shame the so-called wise and powerful.

There is an old saying: “With God, all things are possible.”

That saying is absolutely true.

It is God who accomplishes all things in us.  We are not the power.  We are not the force.  It is God.

The sooner we remember that, the better off we will all be.

FAITH ACTION:  Pray for those who think that the world revolves around them.  Pray that they receive the humility that they need to see God more clearly.  While you’re at it, say a prayer for yourself as well, that you have the humility you need to recognize the power of God in your own life.
