Discipleship

8 Aug

“No one who sets a hand to the plow
and looks to what was left behind
is fit for the Kingdom of God.” (Lk 9:62)

We celebrate the feast of St. Dominic — founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) — today.  As we do so, we reflect upon the fact that Dominic was a person who truly needed to heed the challenge of the Gospel: to set his sight to what was ahead and not look back.

Dominic preached against heresies that were rampant in the 1200’s.  He also was instrumental in reforming religious orders.

He was a person of great vision.

He lent his vision to others, established a religious order of sisters and then of preachers.

Time and time again, he could have quit.  If he would have done so, there would have been many people happy about it.

But he knew that he was entrusted with a special mission by the Lord and he was going to do all that he could for his God.

FAITH ACTION:  God has entrusted a part of His mission to you.  It may be as a faithful spouse, loving parent, dedicated employee or employer, et cetera.  Are you living up to God’s call or have you been shirking that call?  Ask the Lord for the grace you need to remain faithful.
