Come To The Aid Of Others

25 Sep

He who shuts his ear to the cry of the poor
will himself also call and not be heard.  (Prv 21:13)

Sometimes our motives are a bit selfish.  That is not always a bad thing.

Today’s first reading reminds us to put some of the applications of our faith into perspective:  If we expect to be heard when we are in need, we must hear the cry of others in need.

In many ways, that is another way of applying the Golden Rule of do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I know many people — we all do, don’t we? — who are deaf to the plight of people around them.  No matter how loud the cry, they remain deaf and unresponsive.

However, when they are in need, those same people cry louder than others.  They shout.  They scream.  They insist on being heard.  They demand that their needs be met.

Why should they?

If they remain deaf to the needs of others around them, why should they ask for — and expect to receive — any aid?

We do not like to think about others.  We do not want them in any equation.  That is not a part of our human nature, is it?

However, the needs of the other are extremely important and Jesus wants us to meet their needs, to render assistance, to love completely and without regard for repayment.

FAITH ACTION:  Are there people in your life that you only help if you are repaid?  Render true service to someone today with no strings attached.
