There is but one, wise and truly awe-inspiring,
seated upon his throne:
There is but one, Most High
all-powerful creator-king and truly awe-inspiring one,
seated upon his throne and he is the God of dominion. (Sir 1:8)
As much as we would like to think that we are “the one”, we learn, painfully, that it is not so. There are many others who also think that they are “the ones”. It is not so for them, either.
There is only one who, truly, is “the one” and that person is God and God alone. We read that today in the Book of Sirach and it is a very sobering reminder. There are times when we need to be put in our place because, due to our human nature, we try to be more than we are and we try to make others believe we are more important than they are.
Maybe the key word for today would be humility. When we are truly humble, we recognize all that we have and all that we lack. We might recognize that we are very talented and have wonderful gifts, more than others around us. However, when we are truly humble, we also realize that we are the way we are not on our own but because God made us as we are and gifted us with what we have.
Look past yourself today and search for God. If you want to find Him, try looking in the people you encounter throughout the day. He is truly there.
