Let your life be free from love of money
but be content with what you have,
for he has said, I will never forsake you or abandon you.
Thus we may say with confidence:
The Lord is my helper,
and I will not be afraid.
What can anyone do to me? (Heb 13:5-6)
The four words that come quickest to us as we grow are mommy, daddy, mine, and more.
The first two words can be said to be words of safety and comfort.
The second two words are definitely reflections of possession. We claim things as “mine” and we always appear to want “more”.
Perhaps the first two words are possessive as well. We may be feel safe knowing that those two people are mommy and daddy. However, the words are often used not as much to reflect safety as to reflect demand. “Mommy” — get me this, “Daddy” — give me that.
In the letter to the Hebrews today, we are reminded that we should be content with what we have, we shouldn’t have to look for more. We know that God is going to care for us and that should be enough.
If that is the case, we need to ask the question: “Why do we find it hard to trust?”
FAITH ACTION: Pray fervently and simply to the Lord this day:
Heavenly Father,
I trust that you will give me all
that I need this day.
Help me to be satisfied
with what you give me.
