Humble Yourself

28 Aug

My child, conduct your affairs with humility,
and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.
Humble yourself the more, the greater you are,
and you will find favor with God.  (Sir 3:17-18)

The scriptures for today speak to us about humility.

Humility has been defined as the quality or state of being humble; modest opinion of one’s own importance or rank; meekness.  When we reflect upon that definition, we realize, in many ways, that humility does not appear to be consistent with our human nature.

After all, we thrive on being the center of attention.  We desire to be the one noticed, the one in charge, the one calling the shots.

We do not like to have a “modest” opinion of our own importance.  We want other people to know how very important we are.

Jesus wants us to know that it should not be that way with us.

We should be humble servants.  We should care for those who do not have the potential to take care of us.  We should look out for the needs of others rather than for our own wants.

FAITH ACTION:  Try not to put yourself in the center of attention.  Pray for the grace that you need to be more humble today.
