Absolutely No Need To Fear

2 Dec

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The Lord is my life’s refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?  (Ps 27:1)

When we are very young, we are taught about “four letter words”.  We learn that certain words are nasty or dirty and we are instructed not to say them lest we get the consequence for doing so.

Well, there is another four letter word that is not necessarily dirty but one that has dire consequences:  fear.

Fear can cripple or immobilize us.  Fear can make us withdraw from family and friends.  It can even make us withdraw from the world.  Fear colors our perceptions and distorts our view of the world.

Fear acts upon us physically.  It can lead to high blood pressure, anxiety disorders, and cardiac disorders.

Fear is definitely not our friend.

The psalmist knew this when he penned those famous words in Psalm 27:  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?  The Lord is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid?”

We are on a journey this Advent season.  We are “on the road” to Christmas.  If we do our jobs well, we will realize that there are things in our lives that keep us from God.  Some may be little.  Some may be huge.  When we realize that we might have some big things that keep us from God, we might become frightened.

There is no reason to be.  God is with us, He will always help us, we can rely on His presence and His love.  That may be one of the reasons that His angels often began by saying, “Fear Not.”

Indeed.  With the Lord at our side, there is absolutely no need to fear.

FAITH ACTION:  Pray for all those who are immobilized by fear, that they may receive the grace and the courage that they need to break free of their bond.
