Unlocking The Door To Set Us Free

10 Dec

“A prison cell, in which one waits, hopes…and is completely dependent on the fact that the door of freedom has to be opened from the outside, is not a bad picture of Advent.” ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer

We are in need. We cannot do it ourselves. We must have help. Those are words we would rather not think about or say. We are not wired to ask for help. We want to do everything on our own. Yet we know that, without help, we often falter on our own.

We want to get to heaven at the end of our lives. We’re not going to be able to do so on our own though. We cannot save ourselves. We cannot absolve ourselves. We cannot redeem ourselves. We need Jesus for that. We need to turn to Him and ask Him for His grace, love, and mercy.

Probably the best practice we have for that is in asking others for help. None of us likes to fail and none of us likes to admit that we need help. If we ask for help though, we have a better chance at succeeding. And if we succeed with the help of others, we are not the only ones who are built up. Those who helped us are built up as well. Our success becomes their success.

Give yourself a chance. Give others a chance. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Don’t be afraid to ask God for help either. He is willing to come to our aid at any time.

FAITH ACTION: Knowing that it is God who opens the door for us and sets us free from our sins, consider going to Confession today or during the next couple of weeks to prepare for Christmas.
