What Really Matters?

What truly matters? Is it wealth? Fame? Power? Success? There are many who would say a resounding “Yes!” to those and other words that speak of importance and self glory. However, is that what truly matters?
We all know that Jesus would say — has always said — that the answer is no. Wealth, fame, power, success, and any other splendor is all a part of the world and, while it might provide someone with a certain degree of smug satisfaction, is temporal. It doesn’t last. It will come crashing down one day.
What lasts, what is truly important, is our Lord and our response to the Lord’s love for us. The requested response is service of our brothers and sisters. Jesus wants us to humbly care for one another, to love one another, to look out for the good of one another, and to help keep one another on the path that leads to the Kingdom.
I am in Cincinnati at the present time at the annual Knights of the Holy Sepulchre conference. At this conference, we learn about the Christians in the Holy Land (a VERY small minority) and their particular needs. Our annual dues and special donations go to help the Christians as well as maintain the sacred sites in the Holy Land. We have the opportunity to serve our brothers and sisters by membership in this society.
There are many types of organizations that help us to serve the needs of others. We need but search for them and decide which of them we might want to join. Belonging gives us a sense of purpose as well as validates our helping of others. Power, fame, and fortune can never touch the feeling of peace and joy that one can receive when providing for another person’s needs.
FAITH ACTION: Kindly pray for those who will be inducted into the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre tomorrow and pray, even more, for the safety and security of Christians in the Holy Land.
