Do You Want To Change The World?

7 May

“If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.”  ~ St. Teresa of Calcutta

Misplaced priorities.  That is what gets so many people into trouble nowadays:  misplaced priorities.  I can’t count the number of people I have met over the years who have believed that their jobs were more important their families or friends, their attendance at a specific school was more important than their families or friends, and all sorts of other scenarios.

When we consciously, or unconsciously, place other people or other possibilities over those who count most, we sell ourselves short and practically guarantee dysfunction or failure.  I’m not saying that attention to our jobs and careers is not important.  I am saying, however, that more attention on them than on our emotional base of family and friends is a recipe for disaster.

While our careers might be able to bring us so level of comfort and satisfaction, how happy can we be if we realize that we attained a certain level of success only at the cost of breaking up a marriage, losing a friend, alienating our children and other family members, et cetera.

They say that charity begins at home.  It truly does.  If we love the people who are important to us, we strengthen them as well as ourselves and we place ourselves in a better position to love the world around us and effect positive change in the world around us.  If we do not take care of our home base, we will find our attention divided and our ability to focus hampered.

We are called to change the world.  In order to do that, make sure that you solidify your support base by loving family and friends.

FAITH ACTION:  Don’t forget the ones who count on you — your family and friends.
