Do The Right Thing At All Times

3 Feb

“Doing the right thing isn’t always easy – in fact, sometimes it’s real hard – but just remember that doing the right thing is always right.”  ~ David Cottrell

Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Blaise.  He was a bishop in the early church and, as so many Christians back then, was arrested for being a Christian.  The Christians were often given a choice.  They could deny the Lord Jesus Christ and keep their lives or they could continue to embrace Jesus and be put to death, often quite violently.  Blaise was a man of faith who refused to deny the Lord.  He was sentenced to death.

While in prison awaiting execution, it was said that a child of one of his guards began choking on a bone one day.  All the guards attempted to help the child but to no avail.  It looked as if the child was going to die.  Blaise insisted on helping.  They allowed him to help the child and Blaise was successful in dislodging the bone in the child’s throat and the child lived.

I am sure that many a prisoner, seeing someone’s life in jeopardy, would say to themselves, “Let the kid die.  He belongs to the people who want to kill me.  Why help him?”  But that’s the wrong thing to think or to do.  Blaise knew the right thing to do was to help.  He was ultimately put to death but his coming to the aid of the child is remembered every year on his feast day as we bless the throats of the faithful.

Do the right thing today because that is what is asked of us by God.  Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and every other evil.  Amen.

FAITH ACTION:  Ask God for the grace to do the right thing today so as to show yourself to be a true witness of His Son, Jesus.
