Reach For The Heights

Kettering must have looked at his own achievements when he spoke about the Wright brothers’ flight that went “through the smoke screen of impossibility.” Kettering was American inventor, engineer, and businessman. He was a founder of Delco, and was head of research at General Motors from 1920 to 1947. As if to bust the smoke screen of impossibility, he was the holder of 186 different patents.
Nothing, I repeat, nothing is impossible if we set out sight, mind, and heart to something. So many people are grounded because of their fears and doubts. They decide that they are not going to try and, therefore, never succeed. How will we succeed, though, if we do not even attempt something?
Too many people have an undeveloped or underdeveloped faith life. Their prayer is minimal and often does not sustain them. Their works of charity are lacking. Their reading of scripture or other religious texts often doesn’t exist.
If only. If only they would read more. If only they would pray more. If only they would engage in corporal or spiritual works of mercy. If only, if only, if only. We need to quit telling ourselves that we would be better if only. We need to begin doing the things that need to be done in order to soar.
Holiness is not out of our grasp. It is within the reach of anyone who wishes to achieve it. It only takes practice and perseverance. It doesn’t even require huge things. It requires small acts of love repeated over and over again.
The world would want you to believe that holiness is unattainable. The world sets up a smoke screen for believers, telling them that faithfulness to Jesus Christ is impossible for anyone to achieve. It is just that, however: a smoke screen. Blow through that screen by remaining committed to the Lord.
