Let Your Heart Leap

21 Jul

“Once I knew only darkness and stillness… my life was without past or future… but a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness, and my heart leaped to the rapture of living.”  ~ Helen Keller

I have shared a few times in the past my great admiration both for Helen Keller as well as Anne Sullivan, the teacher who was able to reach a rebellious blind and deaf child and teach her to communicate through signing on her hand.  When Keller found out that there was a way to learn and to communicate with the world, the angry, rebellious child was replaced by a young woman eager to learn as much as possible.  She was the first deaf and blind student to receive a Bachelor’s Degree.

In darkness and stillness there truly is no future.  Torturers know this quite well.  There are documented accounts of ways to break prisoners.  One of the most common is sensory deprivation.  A person who is placed in total isolation and in complete darkness will become mentally unhinged in short order.  It takes a very strong person to beat that kind of deprivation.

The world is totally dark because it is bound to sin.  We live in the darkness whenever we give ourselves over to sin.  The Light of Christ can dispel that darkness, though, and open us up to His glory.  We are like Keller when we allow Christ’s light to penetrate our darkness.  When that happens, we want to know as much about the Lord as we can get.  We want to be with Him at all times.  We want to do our best never to disappoint Him.

Darkness waits for us today.  So does the Light.  Each and every one of us has to make a choice concerning which we will grasp.  Do not allow yourself to be unhinged by the dark.  Instead, reach for the Light and be led by Christ.

FAITH ACTION:  Ask God to pour His healing light into your heart and soul in order to dispel the darkness that sin may have entrenched within you.
