Make Your Choice Wisely

“Attitude is a choice.  Happiness is a choice.  Optimism is a choice.  Kindness is a choice.  Giving is a choice.  Respect is a choice.  Whatever choice you make makes you.  Choose wisely.”  ~ Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

There are many times when we claim that we were forced into doing something or being someone.  We say that circumstances made us who we are or that people forced us to do something.  When we say that, we are most certainly not being honest with others or with ourselves.  We always have choices and we exercise those choices on a regular basis.

Given that, the question that needs to be asked is:  Why do we make so many bad choices in life?  I think the answer to that question would be found in our focus.  We can either be focused on this world and all the promises that it makes to us or we can be focused on the Kingdom of God.

If we focus ourselves on this world, we are going to want to go for the “biggies”:  fame, fortune, prestige, instant gratification and the like.  If we focus on the world to come, we will want to go for those biggies:  humility, purity, integrity, honesty, peace, and the like.  Our focus significantly informs our decisions.  In order to choose wisely, we must focus wisely.

I don’t know if you’re doing this right now; but, as I am typing this reflection, I am being reminded of the movie, The Karate Kid.  Mr. Miyagi constantly impresses upon his student, Daniel, to focus.  Breathe in, breathe out.  Focus!  It is only when we keep ourselves focused that we will be able to attain our goals.

Poor choices?  We cannot lay that blame at the feet of others.  They are choices that we freely made and we will have to accept the consequences for them.  Good choices?  God will smile upon us and say to our souls, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Focus on your ultimate goal and make choices that will help you to attain that goal.

FAITH ACTION:  Ask God to give you the grace and courage that you need to make proper and wise choices today.
