Work On Change

13 Mar

“All you can change is yourself, but sometimes that changes everything.”
~ Gary W. Goldstein

We are close to finishing two and a half weeks of Lent.  When we began the journey on Ash Wednesday, we may have made many resolutions that have gone by the wayside.  I would think that happened because the resolutions were not really tailored for ourselves.  We may have bowed to peer pressure or copied the resolutions of others.

As I have written before, Lent is a very personal season.  We go into the season for one reason and one reason alone:  to change ourselves so that we are more prepared to celebrate Easter.  If we focus upon others, our journey is meaningless.  If we make resolutions based upon others, our journey is meaningless.  If we make resolutions that do not reflect our true selves, our journey is meaningless.

“We can’t change things, though!” you might claim.  That might be true if we are talking about the external world.  It is hard to effect change “out there” somewhere.  However, we can certainly change ourselves.

Lent gives us the opportunity to look deep within.  Some people do not like to do that because they abhor the mess inside themselves.  They see the ragged or wretched condition of their souls and they lose heart.  Lent is not designed to make us lose heart.  Lent is designed to remind us that the present condition of our souls can be changed, can be remedied.

It might be an arduous process; however, the sooner we begin and the more earnest our approach, the quicker we will be able to make life-saving changes.  Embrace the power and opportunity that Lent brings.

FAITH ACTION:  Review your resolutions as well as your Lenten journey thus far.  Are you effecting the change you need to make?  If not, modify your plans.  There is still time before Easter.

Remember:  The Fridays of Lent are Days of Abstinence
