Make It Last

6 Jan

“Christmas is like candy; it slowly melts in your mouth sweetening every taste bud, making you wish it could last forever.” ~ Richelle E. Goodrich, Smile Anyway

In the story of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, an enemy of Willy Wonka wants so desperately to steal Wonka’s newest invention, the Everlasting Gobstopper. If he could get that candy, he would become rich and possibly cause Wonka to go out of business. The Everlasting Gobstopper was a piece of candy that would last forever. You could suck on it forever and it would never decrease in size nor lose its flavor. It was the fantasy candy for the poor child.

There are many times in our lives when we have uttered, “I wish this could last forever.” It might have been a first kiss, or a dream vacation, or the joy of the birth of a child. There are things that we would like to revisit over and over again.

Goodrich captures that feeling when stating that Christmas is like candy slowly melting in your mouth. It sweetens all of our taste buds and fills us with delight. We often wish that taste would last forever as we wish the sweet experience of Christmas would last forever.

But we know that all things eventually come to an end. Thank God for cycles, though, because every end seems to point to a new beginning. We have several more days to our Christmas season; however, in short order – or so it seems – next Christmas will be upon us once again.

But, for now, the Christmas Season continues. Try to recapture the “taste” of the season by reflecting upon the story of Christmas, the gift of a Child, for the salvation of the world.

FAITH ACTION: Ask God to extend the joy of Christmas in your heart this day so that you can capture, once again, what Christmas is all about.
