Wanderlust

“I’ve been homesick for countries I’ve never been, and longed to be where I couldn’t be.”  ~ John Cheever

Okay.  Here it is.  The truth about why I like going to Disney every year.  (Well, one of the truths at least.  There are several of them.)  I like going there so much and I claim EPCOT as my favorite of the four parks — in case you’re interested, the rank of my favorite parks is EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios — because EPCOT has the World Showcase.  I really enjoy going there and getting a mini-immersion into the cultures represented.

When I stop at the countries, I visit the cast members, some of whom I have known for several years now, and inquire about different customs.  I browse through their merchandise and literature.  I taste their foods.  And, for a while, I am somewhere else.

Cheever speaks about a wanderlust, of longing to go to countries he has never had the opportunity to see.  I identify with him so much on that.  My mental bucket list includes several countries that I hope to be able to visit before all is said and done.

I can’t help but wonder if that wanderlust most of us experience isn’t rooted deeper than we might think.  I wonder if it is rooted in our soul.  After all, the soul yearns to be somewhere it has not been.  The soul yearns to go to the Kingdom of God, to heaven.

As our souls yearn for such a wonderful destination, they nudge us along the way, trying to get us to make the right choices and do the right things so that we can be in a position to be welcomed home by a God who fashioned us and loves us.

Wanderlust runs deep.  We can finally make it to all the places in the world that are on our bucket lists but I do not think we shall ever be fully satisfied until we make it back home to God.

FAITH ACTION:  Prayerfully reflect upon the Kingdom of God and ask God to help you to keep your feet on the path that leads to Him.
