It Is Not About Us

“A great man is always willing to be little.”  ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

“It is not about me.  It is not about me.  It is not about me.”  We would all do better for ourselves if we would chant that to ourselves each day and as often as we needed to hear it throughout the day..  For it, truly, is not about us.  It is about the Lord.

Sometimes, we let pride get in our way.  We might be pretty good at what we do.  Better than that, we might be extremely excellent at what we do.  That does not mean that we should lord it over others.  We do what we do for the Lord and we want nothing more than for God’s people to be served.  If we do that, that is all that matters.

We do not need the acclaim.  We do not need to be accorded as the best at what we do.  We do not need reward.  Our reward, we hope, is the moment that God says to us, “Well done, good and faithful servant.  Come into the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.”  Then we can hold our heads up, look into the eyes of our Lord, and know that we got there, not on our own, but by His grace.

There are so many people who want to serve, who want to do good and be good.  If we are better than them at it, wouldn’t it be nice to let them take the lead nonetheless.  “A great man is always willing to be little.”  If we let them lead and provide the support they might need if they falter, we are helping them to be even better servants.  In doing that, we perform a greater service than taking the lead away from them and never allowing them to develop to their full potential.

Allow yourself to be little today.  And help someone else to be greater.
