Don’t Be Normal

5 Oct

“If you’re always trying to be normal you will never know how amazing you can be.”
~ Maya Angelou

We have had a Parish Mission speaker a couple of times at our parish who likes to remind us that we are all a unique, special, wonderful, one-of-a-kind, masterpiece of God’s creation.  That is a lot to take in and reflect upon.  However, it is all true.  We are unique.  We are special.  We are wonderfully made.  We are masterpieces of God’s creation.

If we are all of that, why, in God’s green earth, would we settle for “normal”?!  We are not normal.  We are much more than normal.  We are souled, gifted creations of God on our way back home to the Father.  We have so much promise and so much in store for us.  We are far from what the earth would consider normal.

Sadly, there are many people who want to shuck the glories and responsibilities of our special nature and become “normal” in the sight of the world.  We “dumb down” our unique gifts and settle for mediocrity.  That is so wrong.

Jesus did not settle for the world’s standards.  He lived the standards of the Kingdom and He challenged His followers to do the same.  To be anything less is rejecting Him and His teaching. Do not let the world tell you that you can become special if you do its bidding.  Instead, live out your special nature and change the world rather than conform to the world.

FAITH ACTION:  Have you allowed others to bring you down so that you do not live the faith as completely as possible?  Consider going to confession this afternoon.
