Let Go

“You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.”
~ William Faulkner

There is something deep within each and every one of us that guides us to want to be safe.  From the times babies first begin to look at their new surroundings, they keep an eye on their anchors — mommy or daddy — so that they can look to them if they become startled.

Separation anxiety is something that many babies or children experience when their parents try to leave their children for the first time.  The children scream because all that makes them feel safe is leaving them behind.

We often act that way in life.  We cling to all the things that make us feel safe, even if they hinder us from improving.  Some people have turned down promotions because they would have to leave their safety zones.  Others have broken relationships because they did not want to leave the safety and comfort of their friends by moving to another part of the country.

We long to feel safe.  That is something that can keep us from harm.  However, carried to an extreme, it is also something that can hinder our growth.  We cannot move on to new horizons if we are afraid to let go.

God calls us each day to new growth and a deeper relationship with Him.  If we are afraid of letting go of the predictable in our lives, we might find ourselves telling God that we do not want to accept His invitation.  That would definitely be our loss.

FAITH ACTION:  Ask God for the grace and courage to let go of the things that hinder you from trusting Him more.
