“You will never find time for anything. If you want time you must make it.”
~ Charles Buxton
One of the saddest phrases that I hear — and have spoken — is “when I find the time.” Speaking merely for myself, I will say that whenever I have said that, whatever it was of which I was speaking would not get done. “When I find the time” was pretty much the death knell to whatever was being proposed. There would be times that I would lament not being able to do something and times that I would say that I hoped to do so “when I found the time.”
However, in the final analysis, if something is really desired, a person will always “find” the time because that person will always make the time.
I have always wanted to learn to play the piano. I have had some very good instrumentalists at the different parishes at which I was assigned. I have even gone so far as to ask some of them for private instructions. I purchased the books, met with them, but never made the time to rehearse.
Being a musician myself (I played woodwind instruments, clarinet principally), I know how to read notes. However, a knowledge of notes is different than a working relationship with a keyboard. If I was not going to make the time to practice my lessons, my teachers could be the best in the world and nothing would happen.
The difference between wishing and accomplishing is motivation. It is the difference between “finding time” and “making time”. If I would have scheduled piano practices throughout the years, I would be a keyboard player today. Instead, I am still a person who wishes that I could play the piano.
Do you wish you had the time to pray more? Do you wish you had the time to perform the corporal works of mercy? Do you wish you had the time to listen to a friend in need? Do you wish you had the time to spend with God?
Guess what? You DO have the time. All you have to do is make it and the rest will unfold on its own. Do not lament years later that you did not make the time to do what was important.
FAITH ACTION: If a relationship with God is important to you, make time for Him today.
