What Lies Within?

This morning, after our all school Mass, our kindergarten class will celebrate Graduation. This evening, the eighth grade class will celebrate a Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation. Many of our parishioners at other academic stages in their lives have celebrated or will soon celebrate their graduations.
Graduation gives people an opportunity to look behind as well as to look ahead. There have been many things that have brought them to a certain point in their lives and there will be many things that impact their lives at a later date. Looking behind and looking ahead are not bad things to do. They give us perspective and help us to focus. However, while we look behind and ahead, we have to practice yet one more look: within.
We must look at what lies within throughout our lives. If we fail to do so, we might derail our progress. If we fail to look within, we might not see something lacking so that we might compensate for it or something extremely useful on which we might capitalize. Looking at what lies within helps us to be strong yet humble.
The strides that we have made (what lies behind us) and the opportunities to come (what lies before us) are nothing compared to what lies within. It is what lies within that keeps us grounded and able to move ahead. Make sure that you fuel what lies within so that you may keep your feet on the narrow road that leads to the kingdom.
Jesus once said that it would do no good to gain everything in the world if we lost our very selves. Looking at and tending to what lies within will help us to make sure that we do not lose ourselves to the temptations and lures of the world.
FAITH ACTION: Make a personal inventory to determine what lacks within yourself and then make a plan to become that better person Jesus calls you to be.
