It’s In There!

There are some commercials that grab you and make you remember them for a long time. The product owners hope that you remember their product as well. One of my favorite commercials when I was growing up was for Prego spaghetti sauce. You might remember it. A man went to his son’s house to visit and they invite him to dinner. His daughter-in-law made pasta. He inquired as to how she made the sauce.
“Made? Why, I used Prego spaghetti sauce,” the daughter-in-law answered. The man was mortified and complained, “what about the onions, what about the garlic, what about the herbs?!” The answer? “It’s in there!”
That’s what today’s reflection quote is telling us. We often worry about what we are to say to someone in need. We often worry about what we are going to be able to do for someone? We often wonder how we will find the strength, the wisdom, the guidance, and the like. The answer? It’s already in there. In us, that is.
When God calls us to something, He knows that we are going to be able to accomplish His will. God is not some mean character that would set His people up for failure. He is not going to ask us to do something knowing that we will fall flat on our faces. If anything, He asks us to do things that He knows we can do — even if we are unsure about our qualifications — so that we could prove to ourselves that we have it within us to do what He is asking.
The ingredients of the “in there” package can be found on the box of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit comes to us chock full of wisdom and courage and understanding and all the other gifts that will make us who we need to be when we need to be. Don’t be afraid. If God calls you to do something, anything, for Him, He also knows that you have everything you need. It’s in there!
