Choices Make Us

“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”  ~ Roy T. Bennett

Regular or decaf?
Small, medium, or large?
Medium, medium rare, or rare?
Expressway, toll road, or back streets?
Business dress or casual?
Set the alarm or get up on my own?

We are given a huge variety of choices every day of our lives.  We may not think about it; however, our choices really do make us who we are.  Choices show us to be frugal or lavish, cautious or carefree, healthy or devil-may-care.  Sooner or later, those choices become habits and, as you know, habits are some of the hardest things in the world to break.  If our habits are good, we are set.  However, if our habits are bad, we can be in big trouble.

If most people were asked to make a list of the choices that confront them every day, I would venture to guess that very few people would list God or prayer anywhere near the top of their lists.  Most times, the Lord comes as an afterthought.  When everything else is said and done, and if — only if — there is any time left, we might throw a few minutes to the Lord.

That is completely wrong, however.  Confronted with a multitude of choices each day, our first choice should always be God and prayer.  Why?  Quite simply, if we choose God first, all other choices fall in line.  That is because we will already have the attitude of God front and center.

Viewing our choices through the filter of God rather than through the filter of the world, we will be able to make the best choices for ourselves and, therefore, the choices that will most favorably impact all those we encounter throughout the day.

God gave us that tricky gift called free will.  It does not have to get us into trouble, though, as long as we always choose God first.

FAITH ACTION:  In all the infinite choices that await you today, make sure that you first choose God.
