Don’t Be Useless

“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”  ~ Charles Dickens

Anyone can do for others.  That is the simple truth of humanity.  We do not have to be super smart, super powerful, super rich, or super anything.  We can be rich or poor, tall or short, thick or thin, intelligent or simple, yet all of us, each and every one of us, can make a difference in the life of another by lightening their burden.

We may not be able to provide material goods.  We may not be able to provide strength.  We may not be able to provide safety.  Perhaps all that we can provide is a smile and a kind word.  Do you know the value of those precious commodities?

Smiles and kind words to a person that is down in the dumps is worth more than material possessions.  Smiles and kinds words may reconnect a person to a world from which he or she may have felt disconnected.

There are so many times that we get hung up because we believe that we have nothing to offer.  Yet, when we felt ourselves very much in need, was it the extravagant that brought us a smile or comfort?  No.  It was often the presence of a friend, the time spent with someone we haven’t seen for a while, or the note card received in the mail.

Do not think that you have nothing to offer.  Your very self is a gift worth giving to others.  Give of yourself freely.  Let others know that you see them and that you care about them.  That may be all that it takes to change their lives from wretched to wonderful.

FAITH ACTION:  Be one of the many who does for others today.
