Follow What You Love

When I was a child, there was a trash collector in our town that was unlike any trash collector that I had ever seen. I was so glad that our street was on his route because, quite frankly, he was very entertaining. He made trash pick-up a real art.
Some days, he would be in a contest with the other man riding the back of the truck. They would see who could pick up the trash, put back the can, and be standing on the platform of the truck first. Other days, he would be tossing the empty cans back, performing a loop, before settling the can on the ground.
Many times, when the back end of the truck was full and the compactor would need to be employed, he would look around and see if there were any children present. He would often let one of us pull the lever that activated the compactor.
He always had a smile on his face and was usually heard singing over the noise of the truck. He made us happy to be alive. Much to the consternation of many a parent, he also made us want to be trash collectors ourselves.
It is that way with any profession. The vast majority of people could look at a profession and say, “There is no way in God’s green earth that I would do that.” Yet, someone in that profession makes it look simple and enjoyable. They even inspire others to think about doing the work as well.
If you think hard, I believe you could easily come up with examples for yourself about people like this.
The same holds true in living our faith. We have often been inspired by people who did the unthinkable. How many people would consider collecting the dying from the gutters of the streets and bringing them in, bathing their wounds, and loving them in order to give them dignity in death? Mother Teresa of Calcutta did just that and inspired many men and women to follow in her footsteps.
Many great saints have been an inspiration to others. They were because they found what they truly loved — the Lord — and they gave their lives completely to Him.
Imagine what this world would be like if more people did the same.
