A New Day

“It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life for me
And I’m feeling good”
~ Leslie Bricusse

There are so many firsts in our lives and we generally look forward to them all.  Today is one of the “firsts” that many people await: the first day of summer.  Yes.  It is officially here.  Not only can we say that the weather is summer-like, now we can say that it is summer.  The beach worshippers all raise a cheer of victory.  It is here.

Okay.  Maybe that is going a bit overboard; however, you get my point.  Beginnings are important to us because they signal that something has been left behind.  When seasons shift, they signal that a season has passed.  Depending upon which season is a person’s favorite, the shift of seasons can be good or unsatisfactory.

Some people do not take shifts so well.  They may say, “Sure, it’s summer.  That just means we’re one season closer to winter.”  Instead of enjoying the moment, they are lost in the future.  Others get lost in the past.

We are meant to be a present type of people.  Even while we look toward the future — the time God calls us back to Himself — we are called to live in the moment and to make this moment the best that it can be.  We are commissioned to serve one another in the moment so that their needs are met.  If we mourn the past or fret the future, we are not as able to live the moment.

The first time I heard Nina Simone sing Feeling Good, I felt good.  It is a song that fills the listener with hope and joy.  “It’s a new dawn. It’s a new day. It’s a new life for me.  And I’m feeling good.”

Today is a new day:  Spring is gone and summer is here.  Today is a new day:  Yesterday is complete and tomorrow is in the distance.  Today is a new day:  it has been given to us by a generous, loving God.  Try not to waste a moment of this glorious day.

FAITH ACTION:  Has something been dragging you down?  Start fresh on it today.  Approach it from a new angle and with a new attitude.
