Do Not Play It Safe

In today’s first Mass reading, Paul confronts a group of people in Athens. He notes that the Athenians are so religious — they had altars dedicated to all the various gods — that they even had an altar dedicated to an unknown God. They were “covering their bases” so that, in case they had forgotten a god, that god would not take it out on them.
Paul turned that around on them and told them that the God that they were worshiping as unknown was the true God. He was very eloquent and won over many listeners. Some wanted to hear more from him. Others converted right away.
We often cover our bases in life. We do things and say things in multiples so that we please as many people as possible and get into as little trouble as possible. However, when we do that, we really diminish ourselves.
Rather than trying to cover all the bases, we should place ourselves wholeheartedly on the side of the Lord. He is, after all, the one who vanquished sin and death. He is, after all, the only means and hope of salvation. He is, after all, the only way we will get to the Kingdom.
To worship Him halfheartedly while we also look to other false hopes weakens us. Hold firm, today. Let the Lord know that you are dedicated to Him and Him alone.
