We Will Come To An End

27 May

Beloved:
The end of all things is at hand.
Therefore be serious and sober-minded
so that you will be able to pray. (1 Pt 4:7)

There is something that seems to be hard-wired into the brain of a human:  we are immortal.

That is the way so many people live, especially when they are young.

Children and teenagers and young adults often live as if there is nothing that can possibly harm them.  They will attempt anything, no matter how dangerous, because they know that it “will not happen to them”.

And then comes the tragedy.

Someone is involved in something dangerous or stupid and gets seriously injured or even dies.  The rest of that person’s friends looks at one another in utter disbelief.  When attending the funeral of their friend, they often cannot get the idea of his or her death out of their mind because whatever happened should not have.  After all, we’re immortal, aren’t we?

No.

We’re not.

“All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of the field; the grass withers, and the flower wilts; but the word of the Lord remains forever.”  These are sobering words.  They are reminders to us of our own frail human nature, of our own mortality.

Nothing is forever.

And yet, everything is.

Confused?

We are not forever in our mortal frames.  However, that soul, which is what defines each and every one of us, is immortal.  It will survive whatever earthly peril we face.  It will go home to the Lord.  And there, it will be judged.

If we want to be unscathed eternally, we must live aright here on earth.

Which is why we must remind ourselves of that fact that we, like the grass, will wither and die.  If we want to live with the Lord, we must die with the Lord.

FAITH ACTION:  It never hurts to reassess our priorities.  What is most important?  Is it/are they the things of this world?  Or, is the Lord a priority.  The quickest way to answer that question is to look at how you live.
