Do Not Worry About The Future

5 May

Jesus said to his disciples:
“A little while and you will no longer see me,
and again a little while later and you will see me.”
So some of his disciples said to one another,
“What does this mean that he is saying to us,
‘A little while and you will not see me,
and again a little while and you will see me,’
and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
So they said, “What is this ‘little while’ of which he speaks?
We do not know what he means.”  (Jn 16:16-18)

We are not always sure of things.

That is one of the things that bugs us dearly.

Especially when the things of which we are uncertain involve our faith.

Jesus addressed the crowds, speaking about the fact that He would be leaving them.

He used the expression “in a little while.”

We are temporal people.  We are rooted to time and place.  Expressions like “little while” do not go well with us.

We seek definitions.

What does a little while mean?

This question really does become more critical today than it did in the time of Jesus for one simple reason: He has not returned yet.

So far, His “little while” has been nearly two thousand years!

How much longer do we have to wait before that “little while” finally happens?

Those kinds of questions often confound believers.

Instead of worrying about the whens, whys, and wherefores, let us focus on the here and now.

What is God doing in our lives today?

What does God want of us today?

What good can I do today?

Taking it one day at a time truly does help as we wait for the coming of the Lord.

FAITH ACTION:  Instead of worrying about the future, do some positive good — visit the sick, volunteer at a shelter, help a neighbor — for someone today.
