What Do You Truly Treasure?
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.
But store up treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” (Mt 6:19-21)
It was in junior high school that I first became aware of the expression “a roving eye”. I had heard some of the adults speaking about one of the couples on the block. The couple was divorcing and it was because the man had a roving eye.
I didn’t understand what eyesight had to do with it until the phrase was explained to me by my parents.
Apparently, the man liked looking at — and being with — women other than his wife.
His attention to so many others caused his marriage to break up.
I have known others who have broken up relationships because they were more focused on other people or other things rather than on the person to whom their focus belonged.
I have seen other people lose their jobs because their focus on other things took their attention off of their productivity.
Jesus reminds us in the Gospel that our heart will always focus on what we treasure.
Sadly, there are many people who treasure things of this earth rather than things of the Lord. They allow their attention to God to waver and, ultimately, find themselves far from God.
Lest that happen to us, let us ask ourselves what it is we truly treasure.
FAITH ACTION: If you realize that you treasure more earthly things than things of the Lord, make a plan to focus harder on the things above.
