Do You Love Yourself?

4 Jun

One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him,
“Which is the first of all the commandments?”
Jesus replied, “The first is this:
Hear, O Israel!
The Lord our God is Lord alone!
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, with all your mind,
and with all your strength.
The second is this:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment greater than these.”  (Mk 12:28-31)

Leave it to the Lord to distill all the commandments down into two basic ones:  Love God and love your neighbor as yourself.  And, yet, that’s what it is all about.

Folks, it is really quite simple.  We cannot be people of love if we cannot even love ourselves.

There is much written about it; yet, many people still do not know how to do it.

I just went to Google and did a search for “how to love oneself.”  Can you guess how many “internet hits” I came up with for that topic?  “About 25,900,000 results” was the answer that popped up in 0.20 sec.

Almost 26 million responses on “how to love oneself” and there are still miserable people out there.  Because we cannot be people of love if we cannot even love ourselves.

FAITH ACTION:  Do you have problems loving yourself?  Can you pinpoint the reason or reasons?  Once you do so, find some way to minimize those reasons.  Talk to a family member or a friend.  Or, if necessary, seek professional help.  You will have a much better chance at feeling happy and fulfilled if you like yourself!
