There Is Something That Endures

17 Sep

Love never fails.
If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing;
if tongues, they will cease;
if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing.  (1 Cor 13:8)

We do not like to think that we will end.

People spend an inordinate amount of time and money on things that will make them “immortal”.  How many people, through the centuries, have created great works of art so that they would not be forgotten, or built fabulous buildings and other structures?  They did not create these things to make the world a better place.  They did it to make their name known.

When they built their structures or created their art, they did not think about the possibility of it disappearing some day.  They created it to last.

However, nothing that we can do here on this earth will last.

Nothing.

We are mortal.  We are temporal.  We are fragile.  We are temporary.

Paul reminded the early Church that prophecies will be brought to nothing, tongues will cease, and knowledge will be brought to nothing.

Why?

Because we will all end.

But God?

God remains forever.

And God is love.

Love will never fail us.  It is the “glue” that binds all creation together.  It is the medium in which we see God.  It is the ultimate reality that will never change.  Love, shared or received, will remain forever.

When all things finally end, love will lead us home.

Let us abide in love — in God — this day.

FAITH ACTION:  Pray the Act of Love and then decide how you will show God’s love to someone today.

O my God, I love you above all things, with my whole heart and soul,
because you are all good and worthy of all my love.  I love my neighbor
as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me and I
ask pardon of all whom I have injured.
