Who Is He To You?

24 Aug

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and
he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
They replied, Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”  (Mt 16:13-15)

That’s a good question.  A very good question.

It is one that each of us should ponder quite seriously today because our answer is going to reflect the manner and depth of our relationship with God.

To some people, Jesus is the “miracle worker”.  When they pray to Him, it is because they are looking for miracles in their lives.  If those miracles do not happen, many turn away.

To some people, Jesus is the “peacemaker”.  They entreat Him to bring peace to their families, friends, and lives.  If peace does not come, some will lose their faith in Him.

To still others, Jesus is an “anchor” in times of stress.  The beg God to bring calm to their troubled minds and souls.  If they take their eyes off of the Lord, though, like Peter, they sink.

Now, I am not saying that Jesus is none of the above.  He is a miracle worker.  He is a peacemaker.  He is an anchor.  But, He is much more than that.

We should not turn to the Lord for any one thing that He can be or do.

We should turn to the Lord for who He truly is:  our brother and our best friend.

Jesus will be there for us in any need.  He will provide for us.  He will shepherd us.  He will lead and guide us.  He will protect us.

If only we allow.

You.  Who do you say Jesus is?

FAITH ACTION:  Ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you a little bit more today that your relationship with Him may deepen.
