A Matter Of Necessity

10 Jun

Jesus said to his disciples:
“You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand,
where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father.”  (Mt 5:13-16)

Jesus was a fun-loving person.  He appeared to enjoy the company of a whole host of people from every walk of life.  He knew what to say and do to make people feel loved and accepted and welcome.  He celebrated with His people like no other.

Yet Jesus was extremely serious as well.

He told His followers that they must be a certain kind of person.  He did not say that they could if they wanted to.  He said they must.

What kind of people must they be?

Kind.  Generous.  Patient.  Forgiving.  Loving.  Compassionate.

You know the words.

All of those words must describe us as well.

We are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.  We must “season” our world and provide light for others to follow.  Because, if we do not, we are good for nothing but to be thrown aside, to be cast out, to be forgotten.

The world needs us.  Let us not disappoint it today.

FAITH ACTION:  What will you do today to prove that you are salt for the earth and light for the world?
