Israel loved Joseph best of all his sons,
for he was the child of his old age;
and he had made him a long tunic.
When his brothers saw that their father loved him best of all his sons,
they hated him so much that they would not even greet him. (Gn 37:3-4)
Jealousy is a huge problem in our world. It infects family relationships, neighborhood relationships, as well as school and work relationships. When jealousy rears its ugly head, logic never seems to follow.
Instead, people live by their “passions”. Jealousy usually leads to bitterness, anger, or hatred.
Those emotions come to the fore and are acted out against the object of our jealousy.
Imagine Joseph’s brothers selling him for twenty pieces of silver! We say that nothing like that would ever happen among us; yet, there are many times that we act very much the same way. If we had the opportunity to sell the object of our jealousy, we probably would.
Jealousy eats away at the fiber of our nature.
Let it not get to you today. If you are already experiencing jealousy, ask God to help you rid yourself of it. You will be nothing but better for doing so!
FAITH ACTION: Pray for families who are torn asunder because of envy and jealousy. Ask God to heal those family and make them whole.
