Trust The Lord
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
whose hope is the Lord.
He is like a tree planted beside the waters
that stretches out its roots to the stream. (Jer 17:7-8a)
“Trust me.”
Those two words have a tendency to send shivers down most people’s spines.
“Trust me.”
We do not appear to be programmed to trust.
No, I take that back. I think we have been programmed to trust; however, as we grow older, we are taught that we should not trust.
In school, when I was younger, I heard about “stranger danger”. We were told not to trust people we did not know. Then, it got to the point that we began to be taught not to trust some people we did know. Who was to say that the person wearing a police uniform, for example, was really a police officer and had our best interests in mind?
That kind of learning frightens many children. I know it did me.
We learned, furthermore, not to trust business people. “Read the fine print!” was the mantra that so many people taught us. Parents and teachers told us not to accept anything at face value but, instead, to question and doubt almost everything that was presented to us.
Being raised in this manner can often produce a very skeptical person.
As I have said so many times, we often apply our earthly standards to God. If we have been taught to doubt, to question, so many people, it would stand to reason that, sooner or later, we would begin to doubt God as well. After all, we cannot even see Him. If we doubt so much that we see, why not doubt that which we cannot see?
Which is why the message of “trust” in the scriptures — and in our faith — so often sets people on edge. Trust is hard to come by. Trust can frighten some people. But, it is only when we truly come to trust our Lord that we will find peace in our lives.
God is here with us. God is present. God does walk with us. God will always be available to us.
Trust in Him.
