Obedience Is Better

20 Jan

“Does the Lord so delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as in obedience to the command of the Lord?
Obedience is better than sacrifice,
and submission than the fat of rams.”   (1 Sm 15:22)

So often, people get bogged down in their attempts to get God’s attention.  They think that they need to do all sorts of great and glorious things.  They need to impress others.  They need to be outspoken.

Actually, what they need to do is obey.

Simple as that.

Obedience is hard.

Obedience often means turning away from what we want to do in order to do what the Lord wants.

But, it is only when we become an obedient people that we can fully embrace God.

Today, we celebrate the feasts of Ss. Fabian and Sebastian.  Fabian was a pope and martyr.  Sebastian was a martyr.  Their obedience to God led to their deaths.  Yet they, as well as all the other martyrs, would never have it any other way.  They knew that what they were doing was God’s will.  And, if God’s will meant the end of their earthly life, so be it.

Maybe we can adopt that same attitude.

FAITH ACTION:  Are you struggling with God’s will?  Ask Him for the grace to be an obedient child today.
