What Burdens You?

11 Dec

Jesus said to the crowds:
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for yourselves.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”  (Mt 11:28-30)

I “specialize” in making rather short daily meditations.  I try to write something that will capture one of the essences of the daily scripture, give us a moment to reflect, and then move on with our day.  If I wanted to do today’s theme justice, I would have to write a twenty-three page meditation.  You would begin it first thing in the morning and finish it late morning or by noon!

What would I do to make the meditation so long?

List all the things that burden us.

Wars, crime, poverty, broken relationships, failing health, death of loved ones … the list could go on and on and on.

However, I do not really need to write anything like that because all I need to do is say “burdens” and everybody comes up with his or her own lists.  We do not even really have to think very hard about them, either.

We are a real strange people when it comes to burdens.

We do not like them.

We do not want them.

Yet, when we have them, we seem to hold on to them tightly, afraid to let them go.

That is what God wants of us.  He wants us to let go of His burdens and place them on His shoulders.

Believe me, His shoulders are broad enough to accept them.  All of them.

FAITH ACTION:  Have you been carrying a heavy burden on your soul?  In quiet, peaceful prayer this day, hand it over to the Lord.
