The Queenship Of The Blessed Virgin Mary

22 Aug

For a child is born to us, a son is given us;
upon his shoulder dominion rests.
They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero,
Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.
His dominion is vast
and forever peaceful,
From David’s throne, and over his kingdom,
which he confirms and sustains
By judgment and justice,
both now and forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this!  (Is 9:5-6)

Today, we celebrate the memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Why do we speak about Mary as our Queen?

Royalty has been a part of the vision of the prophets from very early on.  They spoke about the coming of the great king, born of the line of kings given to them by God.

If we claim Jesus as our King, it seems appropriate to speak of Mary, His Mother, as our Queen.

Pope Pius XII said it best when he stated, “The most Blessed Virgin is to be called Queen, not only on account of her divine maternity, but also because by the will of God she had an exceedingly important part in the work of our eternal salvation.”

Which is why this feast should do more than prompt us to praise Mary.

This feast should remind us that we, too, have an important part to play in the work of the Lord.

After all, Jesus has entrusted His mission not just to His Mother, Mary, but, to all of us!

You and I have been called to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God.  Let us do so with humble faith and trust.

FAITH ACTION:  In quiet prayer, echo the words of the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation.  Let God know that you, too, are his humble servant and that you will do whatever He asks of you this day.
