What’s In It For Me?

20 Aug

Peter said to [Jesus] in reply,
“We have given up everything and followed you.
What will there be for us?”  (Mt 19:27)

What’s in it for me?

That appears to be the question that we ask ourselves all through our lives.

I’ll do this, as long as I get that.

If I do this, what’s in it for me?

Without this, I’m not going to do that.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus told His disciples that it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle that it was for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God.  Their response was, “Then who can be saved.”

Jesus told them that it was impossible for man but not for God.

To which, Peter responded with the quote above: “What will there be for us?”

We need to follow the Lord without looking out for our own regard.  When we do so, we become much freer and realize the joy of serving God.

However, if we need some assurances, we do receive them from God in today’s Gospel as well:  “Everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.”

FAITH ACTION:  Pray the Our Father slowly and reverently, making sure to let God know that you want His will to be done and not your own this day.
