The Cost Of Discipleship

9 Aug

Jesus said to his disciples,
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world
and forfeit his life?”  (Mt 16:24-26)

From the moment we are very young, we begin to search for what we want.  We plan our lives to include the things that we like.  We seek, we collect, we hoard, we do all that we can to make out well.

If we could get rich in the process, so much the better because, after all, money buys happiness.

At least, that is what we are often led to believe.

However, the only true happiness is not tied to fame or fortune, to finances or possessions.  True happiness comes from God, is rooted in God, is complete only with God.

The moment that we realize that, our lives will change — for the better.

FAITH ACTION:  What is there that you need to deny yourself of in order to follow the Lord more closely this day?  Ask Him for the grace that you need to forsake whatever keeps you from Him.
