Everyone Is Important

1 Aug

Every scribe who has been instructed in the Kingdom of heaven
is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom
both the new and the old.  (Mt 13:52)

“New and Improved”

“Revamped”

“Revised”

“Better Than The Original”

All of these, and other slogans, point to the fact that we often are drawn to change.  We like to see things that are different, new, improved.

In the process, we often do not appreciate the “old”, whether that be in terms of products or in terms of people.

Old, passe, and other phrases connote something undesirable.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds His people that everything has value:  old as well as new.

How do we perceive our faith?  Do we look toward those things only that are new?  Do we cling to the past and put off the new?

We need to be open to the old and the new.  Or else, some day, others will not be open to us!

FAITH ACTION:  Are there practices in the faith that you have put off because they are “too old” or “too new”?  Reconsider how and why you have judged them so.  Try to find the value in them this day.
