The Birth Of The Deacons

13 Apr

The Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said,
“It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.
Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men,
filled with the Spirit and wisdom,
whom we shall appoint to this task,
whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer
and to the ministry of the word.”  (Acts 6:2-4)

In today’s first reading, we hear about the birth of the diaconate.

The apostles were frustrated because their time was being taken from proclaiming the Word of God in order to provide for the community at table.

Because of that, they decided to propose to the community that others be brought forth who would be appointed to the task of serving at table.  They were the first deacons.

There is always work to be done — much work — and it seems as if we never have enough time to accomplish it.

Sometimes, we need to manage our time better.

Other times, we need to rely upon the help of others.

There is something in our human nature that tells us that we need to do things on our own.

However, God places many people in our lives in order to help us and in order to get the work of the Kingdom accomplished.

Trust in that today.

FAITH ACTION:  Have you been refusing the help of another person?  Perhaps it is the Lord placing that person in your life.  Accept the proffered help today.  Additionally, please pray for those who have been raised to the service of the diaconate, that God bless their ministries!
