Seek To Understand
“But the seed sown on rich soil
is the one who hears the word and understands it,
who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.” (Mt 13:23)
The parable of the seed in today’s Gospel is a very rich parable and one that never ceases to speak to me.
In it, Jesus reminded (and continues to remind) His people that the “soil” of their hearts must be made as ready as possible to receive the “seed” — the Word of God.
If our soil is properly prepared, the seed can take root, grow, and produce much fruit.
If the soil is ill-prepared, filled with weeds, or cluttered with rocks, the seed has no chance to take root and produce.
Just as one prepares the soil for gardening by plowing, turning, fertilizing, and weeding, so one prepares the “soil” of one’s heart by prayer, contemplation, and works of mercy.
FAITH ACTION: Today would be a good day to reflect upon the Beatitudes since recognizing our relationship with and our dependence upon God truly helps us to prepare the soil. Prayerfully consider:
When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Mt 5:1-12)
